your support changes lives

It has been said that we are all given three choices in life: give up, give in, or give it all we’ve got. The Lampert Family from Prior Lake, MN has chosen the third option in their battle against cystic fibrosis (CF).

Grant and Stacy’s firstborn, Mason, entered the world 3 ½ weeks early by emergency C-section. After a handful of days in the hospital being treated for severe jaundice, Mason was sent home with his loving parents…and UV lights. This new family shared one night of ‘happily ever after’ before receiving a call that would forevermore change their lives. One day after bringing Mason home, Stacy answered the phone without a second thought and heard her doctor say, “Are you sitting? I need you to get your husband and sit down.” With a sinking feeling of dread, Grant and Stacy sat side by side and learned “Your son has CF. We need you to take him to the University of MN Hospital right away.”

As Stacy looked down at her beautiful, peaceful baby boy, the names and faces of the many CF patients she had helped during her time as a physical therapist came flooding back. She vividly remembered the coughing, endless lists of medications, hospitalizations, deterioration, and pain those battling CF endured. She helplessly watched family after family lose loved ones, and realized in terror she may one day face the same fate.

After a few rounds with tears, Grant and Stacy realized there was no way they could predict Mason’s journey with CF. From that day forward, they chose to live life exactly how they wanted. They decided to go down to a single income so Grant could stay home with Mason and ensure he received the best possible care. Thanks to his parents’ unwavering commitment, Mason is a healthy 8-year old who just happens to have CF. He is described by his teacher as a gentle spirit who would “much rather help someone than do his own work.” Those that know him best marvel at his outgoing, humor-filled nature, and love helping him develop his interests in Taekwondo, basketball, engines, swimming, and Spanish. He is a great example for his 5-year old brother, Sawyer, who has dibs on every single airway clearance vest Mason outgrows!

The Lamperts understand that each new challenge they overcome with CF will be followed by another. After getting Mason to swallow enzymes, they worked to add weight to his too-slight frame. After tirelessly fighting a viral infection that caused a 30% reduction in Mason’s lung function, they patiently explained to others why they were raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation when “Mason doesn’t look very sick.”

Their journey to ‘figure CF out’ will never be easy, but it has taught them to live life to the fullest and love others like there is no tomorrow. CF parents are emotional, yet solid as a rock. Tired, but never quitters. Worried, but full of hope. Impatient, yet patient. Overwhelmed, but still going. Amazing, even though doubted. Wonderful, even in the chaos. Life changers, every single day.
